About the Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham Yatra are four pilgrimage sites located in the serene heights of the Great Himalayan range of Uttarakhand namely Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. All four shrines are located to different gods in Hindu mythology. 

Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna, Gangotri is dedicated to goddess Ganga, Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the Panch Kedars and one of the twelve Jyotirlings of India and Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Yatra starts from Yamunotri then proceeding to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Overview

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages, which involves visiting four sacred shrines located in the state of Uttarakhand, India. These shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—are situated in the pristine and spiritually significant regions of the Garhwal Himalayas. The pilgrimage is believed to purify the soul and is an essential part of Hindu religious traditions.

The Four Temples

  1. Yamunotri
    • Dedicated to: Goddess Yamuna, the river goddess.
    • Location: At an altitude of 3,293 meters, in the western region of Uttarkashi.
    • Significance: It marks the origin of the Yamuna River, considered a source of protection from untimely death.

  3. Kedarnath

    • Significance: Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, sacred shrines of Lord Shiva.

  4. Badrinath
    • Dedicated to: Lord Vishnu.

Best Time for the Yatra

  • The Char Dham Yatra typically occurs between May and October, as the temples remain closed during the harsh winter months (from November to April) due to heavy snowfall and dangerous weather conditions.

The Yatra usually begins from Haridwar or Rishikesh (two prominent pilgrimage towns) and follows the order:
